The following are the rules and requirements set forth by the American Taekwondo Association (ATA) for rank advancement:

Stripes: All students earn black performance stripes. PERFORMANCE stripes are placed on the left side of the belt. RANK stripes are placed on the right side of the belt.

Testing for Rank: When testing for rank, as student may earn one of the following. FULL rank promotion (excellent performance) or a no change (rank stays the same), more time needed to learn - never to be regarded as failure.

The right side of the belt reflects rank. DECIDED (senior level of rank) is noted with a stripe. RECOMMENDED (junior level of rank) has no stripe. As the rank becomes higher, so does the level of requirements to test and pass to the next rank.

All testings are based on the quality of the performance. White through Yellow belt must attend a minimum of 12 classes (Average 2 classes per week). Camo through Black belt must attend a minimum of 14 classes. The waiting period is 8 weeks to qualify for testing. Testing is by invitation only, and is at the discretion of Ms. Snyder & Mr. Lary. The stripes are based on the definitive requirements but just as importantly, on courtesy, respect, and a positive attitude. Testing fees includes new rank belt and certificate and ATA Administration Fees. White Belt testing fee also includes an ATA uniform patch, 1-year membership to the ATA and ATA Magazine subscription.
